Our plan for Thanksgiving was to serve the residents of Nuestra Senora de la Providencia but as we learned from the moment we arrived in Puerto Rico, things do not always go as planned. In Puerto Rico, Thanksgiving day is a day of rest and a day spent with family. We were given the opportunity to spend our Thanksgiving with the residents of Nuestra Senora de la Providencia. Instead of serving food, we were given a tour by the sisters, helped with cleaning and laundry as well as interacted with residents. What struck us most was the joy of the sisters and how hard they work to care for everyone. The sisters showed us the damage that their building endured during Hurricane Maria. The sisters and an employee told us this 4 story concrete building actually shook during the storm. They showed us the doors and windows that still need to be repaired. Despite all the work that needs to be done after the storm and all the work that exists every day and night here, the sisters took time from their duties to spend with us and share their work and experiences with laughter and smiles on their faces.
